Synopsis

Within everyone there exists a side preferably kept hidden, even from close friends. For the smart and popular Kyouko Hori, it's the fact that she has to do all the housework and care for her little brother, Souta, because of her parents' busy work schedules. For the gentle Izumi Miyamura, whom everybody sees as an otaku, it's his nine hidden piercings and large body tattoo.

So what happens when they accidentally discover each other's hidden sides? Sharing parts of themselves that they couldn't with anyone else, strong bonds of friendship soon begin to form between Miyamura and Hori, as well as those around them. As their hidden personas start to dissipate, they slowly learn how to open up to others.

More in line with the original webcomic than the manga, as shown by the art, which I actually really like. It’s more romance focused than Horimiya, however it only has half the runtime. It still has the same vibes as Horimiya, but I think they’re actually more potent here, mostly due to the art design. Anyways it’s the same story as the first four episodes of Horimiya with slight adjustments, but with less of the feeling of high school. Once again this show is no longer about what it means to be a high schooler like Horimiya, but more about the romance story of Hori ...

Before there was a full TV anime adaptation for this series there was this. It's a series of OVAs that, in a technical sense, are a more accurate 1:1 adaptation of the source material. Although since the TV version aired they did a couple more of these OVAs so also technically it both came before and outlasted the other one.

Is it any better? No not really. I think they're both fine in their own sense. I like the story of Hori and Miyamura enough that I was willing to watch it twice in two different art styles, so big points there. Obvious art is subjective, ...

Mixed Feelings

I've been scratching my head over how to put this whole experience in a simple sentence even since I first watched this seemingly lovely adaptation. But I guess the head scratch tells you more than a sentence ever could.

I feel bad because, on the one hand, you have this very charming, nostalgic (by the looks of it) mini-web series that tells you the makers poured a lot of love into shape and finalization, even when it is lacking any semblance of world-class production you see very often nowadays in mainstream shows, but then again, especially back in the day when this came out, the series ...
