Why is Hyundai maintenance so expensive?
I was looking at the service menu at the local Hyundai dealership (or stealership) and was stunned at the service cost and what needs to be done:
http://www.agincourthyundai.com/agincou ... hedule.htm
For example:
12 months and 24K
Lube, Oil & Filter Service
33-Point Inspection
Check All Fluid Levels
Tire Rotation
4 Wheel Brake Service
Internal Engine Service
Replace Cabin Filter
Coolant Service
4 Wheel Alignment
approx $500
I can't recall the last time I needed to do these items in bold after 1 year.
24 month 48 K
Lube, Oil & Filter Service
33-Point Inspection
Check All Fluid Levels
Tire Rotation
4 Wheel Brake Service
Internal Engine Service
Replace Cabin Filter
Coolant Service
4 Wheel Alignment
approx $700!
Am I reading this right? Is this the Hyundai (aka Korean cars) or a BMW service!
And there I thought Toyota maintenance was getting expensive!

Check the manual and see what the manufacture requires. The dealer is going to sell you whatever they can. Coolant and alignment are likely unnecessary. Brake service is never a bad idea in our climate.

Mazda prices were similar. I just skip the major services as the car is running fine. They wanted $500 at the 2 year mark for what was essentially a glorified inspection. [removed]

This is the Hyundai dealership network trying to make a buck as they didn't make much when selling you the vehicle.
BMW maintenance would be no-charge but then you would have effectively pre-paid the first 4 years of service as it's really built into the sticker price.
But accordingly they would not even contemplate a coolant service after 1 year. Nor an alignment. (And they don't in general subscribe to routine tire rotation.)
Never owned a Hyundai myself but have heard the same thing from other people. They get you in the end.

WTF is an internal engine service? Remove oil cap and look into the engine? What BS!!
I've owned my Elantra for almost 4 years and not once has my car been to the stealership for service. I do all my own maintenance and whatever I can't do I'll take it to my trusted mechanic.

It's human nature to take a mile when given an inch. All dealerships are cashing in.
Once people remain oblivious to the basics of car maintenance while owning a car and not aware of alterantives like private mechanics, the dealerships will always be able to cash in.
Regardless of make or model many buy new cars so they don't worry about maintenance initially, except for basics like oil changes, which some don't even do.
Eventually it becomes necessary and the well informed car owner can make more economical choices than the one who can't be bothered.
Hyundai is moving up in ranks too. Look at their sales figures.

Don't bring any car to the dealership for maintenance.
This happens with ALL brands.

I had a series of scheduled service packages around the 100K mark for my Grand Vitara...it was going to come to around $1100. This included:
Change Oil and Filter
Inspect Air Filter
Inspect: Exhaust, brakes, tires, wheels, suspension, drive shaft, steering linkage, power steering, and basically everything else on the vehicle
Change transmission fluid, diff oil, transfer case fluid, brake pads as needed, spark plugs, brake fluid.
I change the oil regularly with synthetic that I buy on sale, every 10K, and it costs me about $30 each. I just changed the front brake pads - cost me 1.5 hours of time and $55 of Bosch premium brake pads from Amazon. I visually inspected everything else while I was there in basically a half hour, and every time I change the tires over anyways (winters/summers).
Dealerships are a rip off. Other than fluids (very important), just fix things when they fail or are about to fail. Other than a catastrophic failure (hub breaks off and the wheel flies off the vehicle at full speed, etc.), you will literally either come to a rolling stop (if it's engine related) or things will just stop working as well as they should (failing shocks start making the ride bumpy, brakes squealing, wheels pulling to one side).

I'm using a local shop to do my services. Kia is about the same, 50$ then 200$ then 300$ and 500$ at stealerships. The shop does everything the 500$ includes for 60$. Then they write it down on the sheet I get for warranty purposes.

How else will they make their money?
Like these packages, this brake service is another scare tactic IMO it's unnecessary. It can't be luck after three vehicles not once I got it done.

WTH is internal engine service? Do you have a direct injection motor that requires special cleaning? But isn't that around 100k?
There is absolutely no need for coolant services and wheel alignment this early. Oil change, cabin filter change and wheel rotation maximum would be 80-100 bucks at an Indie mechanic or doing it yourself. I would throw in topping up other fluids in that 100 dollar range.

OP, you should learn how to change your own cabin filter. On my hyundai its as simple as my previous honda. You dont even need tools to do it. It may be different on your car, but for the most part its pretty simple. Yes you should change it every 24k. I have a K&n re-usable cabin filter. Cost a bit more at first, but over the years, it'll save you money.
You can learn to do all, if not most of this stuff yourself, if you are a bit hands on. I do pretty much everything on your list my self. However, i still dont know what internal engine service is. Even if you not that hands on. I'm sure you should be able to change your own cabin air filter.

After doing a quick google search, basically an "Internal Engine Service" is a glorified way of Hyundai saying an engine flush.
"Chemicals are poured into the engine, which is then gently idled for a few minutes to make sure the cleaning agent reaches everyplace oil would normally go. Then the chemicals are drained, just like the oil would be for an oil change. An engine flush is often performed after the old oil is taken out and before the new, clean oil is poured in."
The best part, "many manufactures DO NOT recommend doing an engine flush on modern vehicles, as they can be damaged by the procedure!" No kidding...
Looking at Hyundai's Maintenance Plan I also came across this gem "Induction System Service" which is done at 15 Months or 30,000kms.

They can charge it because of the market...people are more likely to trust work by the dealership while vehicle is under warranty

I only do alignment if and when something is replaced in my suspension. Done it this way for years and tires wear just fine.

I remember people used to put a half liter of tyranny fluid in their engine drive 50 klicks or so then change their oil. Never did this my self as it seemed a little sketchy to me.
